DUI and criminal defense in Coquina Key

Coquina Key is a man-made island about three miles south of downtown, built between Big Bayou and Little Bayou and reached by just two bridges. That geography gives it one of the most distinctive enforcement patterns in the city: with only two ways on and off, traffic funnels through a pair of narrow bayou crossings, and a stop often comes right at a bridge.

I am Rory Safir, and I defend DUI and criminal cases across St. Petersburg and Pinellas County, in the Sixth Judicial Circuit. I began my career as an Assistant Public Defender in Florida’s Thirteenth Judicial Circuit, and I am one of only six attorneys in Florida recognized as a Forensic Lawyer-Scientist by the American Chemical Society, so I read the breath and blood science myself rather than taking the State’s report at face value. The firm is based in St. Petersburg, so a neighborhood case here is a local case. Learn more about my background.

How DUI enforcement works in Coquina Key

The two bridges, at 39th Avenue South and 45th Avenue South, are the only vehicle access on and off the island, and they funnel onto 6th Street South, with the commercial corner at 6th Street South and 45th Avenue. Nearby south-city corridors like 4th Street South and Interstate 275 toward the Skyway carry the wider traffic. St. Petersburg police and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office run multi-agency saturation patrols and set up sobriety checkpoints on the busy corridors, and they publicize checkpoints ahead of time through local media and their social channels. Enforcement runs heaviest late on weekend nights, around holidays, and during the big downtown events, and a routine stop can turn into a breath test, a blood draw, or a refusal within minutes.

The nightlife, and the roads home

The island itself is quiet, with the gated Waterside community’s private residents’ club and the nearby Tiki Docks waterfront tiki bar just off the south side. On the island, Munch’s has been a diner icon since 1952, once featured on national television, and Coquina Key Pizza and Subs anchors the small commercial strip. Most stops come as residents cross a bridge home from downtown or a waterfront gathering.

Beyond DUI: criminal defense in Coquina Key

The island sees its share of criminal charges alongside DUI, from drug and theft to disorderly and probation matters. I defend the full range for Coquina Key residents, I examine the stop closely given how the bridges funnel traffic, and I handle each case personally from the first call, because on the Friendly Island a case is still a local case in the Pinellas courts.

About Coquina Key

Coquina Key was originally Lewis Island, platted and abandoned in the early 1910s, then dredged into an island by developer Charles Hall around 1920. The Mackle brothers, who also built Key Biscayne, bought 350 acres in 1955 and planned 1,400 homes, and a 1957 naming contest with more than 7,000 entries gave the island its name and its nickname, the Friendly Island. Coquina Key Park on Big Bayou offers lighted soccer and tennis, a dog park, a fishing dock, and bayou views, and the old Coquina Key Plaza is being redeveloped into housing and retail.

How I help, and where to read more

The Florida law that governs a Coquina Key case is the same law I cover in depth on the main pages, so this page stays local and links you there. Start with the DUI defense overview, the criminal defense overview, or the field sobriety exercises and breath test pages for the science I read myself. For the wider city and county, see the St. Petersburg page and the Pinellas County DUI and criminal defense page.

What to do after an arrest in Coquina Key

If you have just been arrested, a few things matter more than anything else. Stay calm and stay quiet, because you have the right to remain silent and using it is not an admission of anything. Do not consent to a search of your car, your phone, or your home. If a DUI is involved, the clock is already running, and you generally have ten days to act to protect your driving privilege. Write down everything you remember about the stop, the testing, and what the officers said while it is fresh. Then call, because the sooner we are involved, the more of your case we can protect, and the first consultation is free and available any hour of the day.

Common Questions

I was stopped crossing a Coquina Key bridge. Was that a valid stop?

It depends on why the officer stopped you. The reason for the stop is one of the first things I examine, because a stop that was not lawful can undo everything that follows.

Does the island geography matter to my case?

It can. The bridges funnel traffic, so the details of where and why you were stopped are worth examining closely, and I know these corridors well.

Where would a Coquina Key case be heard?

In the Pinellas County courts of the Sixth Judicial Circuit, with the separate license case at the Clearwater DHSMV office within ten days of the arrest.

Do you handle cases for the Waterside and Big Bayou communities?

Yes. I represent Coquina Key residents across the island, from the gated waterfront communities to the Big Bayou homes, in the Pinellas courts of the Sixth Judicial Circuit.
